In 1948, John M. McKevitt started his trucking business in Schreiber, Ontario with a 1946 two ton Chevrolet truck. By the early 1950's, John had moved his business to Port Arthur, Ontario to work for Northern Wood Preservers and in 1954 began hauling lumber into the USA.
In 1960, service expanded to eastern Ontario. This expansion required the establishment of a company terminal in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario which looked after predominantly lumber and steel loads.
John grew the business over the years and incorporated his business as McKevitt Trucking Limited in May 1961. By the mid 1960's, a centralized dispatch and maintenance facility was established on Fort William Road while Administration was set up in the basement of the McKevitt family's home in Thunder Bay.
In 1967, the company purchased a Metro Toronto Class “C” license for truckload freight. This license marked the beginning of McKevitt becoming known as a general hauler of freight and caused the establishment of a Toronto terminal. At the same time, McKevitt became one of the first trucking companies to regularly use multi-axle trailers in the Lakehead area.
Early in the 1970's John became an active member with the Ontario Trucking Association (OTA). By the late 1980's, he was elected to the OTA's Board of Directors on which he still sits today.
By the early 1980's, John expanded the company's service area to include the USA and obtained the company's American operating authority from the Interstate Commerce Commission in 1984.
1985 saw the company expand its operating authorities to all of Ontario and the USA. Additional authorities were obtained from the Interstate Commerce Commission and a General Commodity license to haul truck load and less-than truckload freight in Ontario was obtained. It was at this time that the company set up its current terminal at 1419 Trunk Road in Sault Ste, Marie, Ontario.
In 1986, the company moved to a fully computerized Operations and Administration system increasing the efficiency with which it served its customers.
In 1987, McKevitt purchased the first Series 60 electronically controlled engine produced by Detroit Diesel in North America.
By the late 1980's, McKevitt had out-grown its facilities and began planning and building its new head office in Thunder Bay. The facility was opened in 1990 and allowed all departments of the company to be centralized at one location. The company continues to be based out of this facility at 1200 Carrick Street in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
In 1996, McKevitt built its current terminal at 1540 Britannia Road East in Mississauga, Ontario. This facility allowed the company to continue its growth in southern Ontario and provide more service for freight headed to northern and north-western Ontario.
1998 saw the addition of a terminal in Sudbury, Ontario to allow the company to increase its service to that area. McKevitt continues to operate this terminal on Highway 69 South in Sudbury, Ontario.
McKevitt continued its commitment to provide efficient service by installing satellite tracking and communication in each tractor in 1999. This installation allowed the company to pin-point the location of a customer's freight at any given time and monitor its progress to ensure on time delivery.
Throughout the 2000's, McKevitt has focused on fleet renewal. John McKevitt has worked closely with equipment manufacturers to ensure that we operate a fleet of modern equipment that not only meets current emission standards but provides increased fuel efficiency and a comfortable work environment for our drivers.
By the mid 2000's McKevitt was working closely with Customs on both the American and Canadian side of the border to safeguard the supply chain. The company was proud to announce it's participation in the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) in 2005. The company is also a participant in Customs Self Assessment (CSA), Free and Secure Trade (FAST), Partners in Protection (PIP) and Automated Commercial Environment (ACE).
In 2007, McKevitt implemented a document imaging program to increase the efficiency at which the company manages its paper documents. This system also allowed the company to greatly reduce paper consumption and storage of paper documents.
Late in 2007 and into 2008, the company revised its website and launched a new and improved website: www.mckevitt-trucking.com. The new site is customer focused and will allow McKevitt the flexibility to offer on-line customer access as the company grows.
McKevitt also acquired the first two DD15 engines to be used in Freightliner Cascadia tractors in 2008.
